What is Short Term Respite?

Short Term Respite is planned support that gives participants a change of pace and gives families and carers a well-earned break. It comes in two forms, staying somewhere different for afew nights, or having a support worker step in at home — and both are fundedunder the NDIS.

It can include:

  • Short Term Accommodation (STA) — a stay of one or morenights in an Amity respite home
  • In-home respite — a support worker comes to theparticipant’s home so the usual carer can step away
  • Planned breaks during school holidays or carer travel
  • Trial stays before considering longer-term arrangementslike SIL
  • Emergency or unplanned respite when circumstances change quickly
  • We get to know what makes a stay enjoyable for you — your routine, your interests, your way of relaxing

Whether you’re after a few nights away or just a chance for the household to breathe, respite is built into the NDIS for a reason. Use it.

Common Questions

STA means the participant stays at one of our respite homes for one or more nights. In-home respite means a support worker comes to the participant’s home so the usual carer can step away. Both are funded under the NDIS, just under different categories.
STA is usually funded under Core Supports in your NDIS plan. In-home respite is typically funded through Personal Care or Community Participation depending on the support provided. We can help you check your plan and work out what fits.
For planned respite, the more notice the better — ideally a few weeks for STA, especially during school holidays when demand is high. For unplanned or emergency respite, get in touch and we’ll do what we can.
Absolutely. Many families build regular respite into their routine — a weekend a month, a few nights each school holiday, or a regular weekly in-home break. Routine respite is often the most sustainable kind.
